What’s The Story
Jane’s daughter is a good girl. But what is she hiding?
When thirteen-year-old Savannah Hopkins doesn’t come straight home from school as she always does, her mother Jane immediately raises the alarm. With her blonde ponytail and red school jumper, someone must have spotted Savannah.
Detective Natalie Ward is determined to help the distraught mother – her own daughter is the same age as Savannah. But before Natalie and her team can get started, their worst fears are confirmed when the teenager’s broken body is found in nearby shrubland.
Evidence points towards a local recluse, but just as Natalie closes the net around him, one of Savannah’s friends, Harriet, is reported missing. Harriet might look grown up and sophisticated but she is only fourteen…
As Natalie delves into the lives of both girls, she soon discovers a sinister video on both their phones, daring the girls to disappear from their families for 48 hours. She’s sure this is the key to the case, but before she can act, Harriet’s body is found discarded on a roadside.
Natalie’s superiors don’t have to put any extra pressure on Natalie. Devastated, she and her team work without sleep, watching that video over and over. But just as she thinks they’re getting close, the person Natalie loves more than anything goes missing.
Natalie is no stranger to loss. She is terrified and the clock is ticking. Can she push through her fear to catch this depraved killer, before her loved one becomes the next victim?
This gripping rollercoaster of a read will have you up in the small hours turning the pages. Fans of Angela Marsons, Rachel Caine and Robert Dugoni will love The Dare.
I remember as a kid playing the game Truth or Dare, would you go for Truth or take my Dare and read The Dare by Carol Wyer.
You know what……….I Dare You! Are you brave enough.
It’s unbelievable that we are reading book 3 in the series of DI Natalie Ward and it certainly hasn’t disappointed. To me its an ultimate close to home, crime thriller which will have you holding your children closer tonight. Now we all know that not all children especially teenagers follow ground rules set out by parents, I know mine certainly are no exception and the ones that Ward encounters are no different.
Ward and the team have the arduous task of investigating the disappearance of a teenage girl Savannah, her mother Jane raised the alarm when she didn’t return from school, before long a body is discovered and another girl goes missing. Will Natalie solve the investigation, an will they be able to stop the onslaught of deaths before another teenager goes missing. Is there a reason behind the missing or is it just a random opportunistic perpetrator who is just taking a chance, being bold, brazen with a callousness to use the children to convey a message.
Every character seems to be well bulked out, all with flaws and with a real sense of identity that you could in some way understand. I particularly like how Carol has allowed me to feel the rocky road that Natalie is travelling down within her marriage, the feeling of detachment from her children and the intense pressure within her work and family life.
The Dare was laid before me, the crisp white pages intoxicating, the words absorbing and the adrenaline rushing through my imagination. With every part of my brain screaming faster, faster, the hunger to keep within the pages and the book to never end slowed my fingers until I could stand the intensity of the investigation no more and I had to finish with DI Ward by my side.
Carol has left the door open for more to be added to the DI Ward series and I look forward to them with baited breath.
My thanks to Bookouture, Carol Wyer and Kim for allowing me the opportunity to read and review an arc of The Dare. Been a long time coming an undeniably fantastic read to ease me back into blogging.
