Michael Fowler is a new author to me, I’ll admit I’ve read nothing previous to You’re Next, and as you may be aware its the second in the DS Scarlett Macey series, now don’t let this put you off I certainly didn’t. You’re Next would do just as well as a standalone due to there being sufficient backstory to carry the plot and the characters without the readers feeling bamboozled. I will say though if you get the opportunity start at the beginning with Scream, You Die.
Opening with a criminal case, James Green ‘The Lycra Rapist’ is on trial for multiple rapes, the case crumbles and falls apart on the first day, the victims are too scared to testify. The biggest case of DS Scarlett’s career has just dissolved, James Green walks free, Scarlett isn’t done with Green, determined he won’t walk the streets for long, Scarlett hatches a plan to rid society of Green, but he has ideas of his own.
You’re Next isn’t centred around just one investigation but coincides with other smaller but just as important crimes, which blended the plotline together, bringing in other characters from the team, plumping out the book making the whole plot that bit more juicy…..an exceptional way to get your teeth sunk into a gritty book.
Scarlett is a spunky Detective Sergeant, with a great deal of guile, solid characteristics which make for a highly likeable character, forefront to all of Scarlett’s personal attributes is her ability to guide and direct an investigation with ease. Scarlett is not one for being trampled on she asserts herself and leads with a strong sense of presence at work and in her personal life.
James Green, rotten too the core, a vehemently aggressive character who will chill the blood in your veins at the vision of his cruelty. James is a man I can honestly say I loath with a passion, he excretes a dark vile aura, which seems to engulf his whole demeanour, blackening his very soul.
You’re Next has short chapters which I found to produce a sharp, crisp and concise storyline which fulfilled my every need when turning the pages, devouring each and every word, gobbling them up until it was time to vacate the page and move on. Michael certainly managed to placate my appetite with the hardened grit, a true darkness and the depths of depravity another human can sink while on the hunt. It literally feels like the hunted has now become the hunter, a bit of role reversal but with a continued flip of the switch. Who’s going to win out.
Thanks to Michael Fowler and Caroline Vincent for an advanced readers copy of You’re Next in exchange for an honest and unbiased opinion. Its been a pleasure, thanks again for having me on the Blog Tour.
Following retirement, after thirty-two years as a police officer, working mainly as a detective, Michael returned to the deadly business of murder, as a writer. His past work brought him very close to some nasty characters, including psychopaths, and gruesome cases, and he draws on that experience to craft his novels: There is nothing gentle about Michael’s stories.
His landmark novel Heart of the Demon, published in 2012, introduced Detective Sergeant Hunter Kerr. Michael has since written five novels and a novella featuring Kerr. He also released the first DS Scarlett Macey book in 2016. Michael is also the author of a stand-alone crime novella and a true crime thriller.
Michael Fowler has another side to his life – a passion for art, and has found considerable success as an artist, receiving numerous artistic accolades. Currently, his oil paintings can be found in the galleries of Spencer Coleman Fine Arts.
He is a member of the Crime Writers Association and International Thriller Writers.
