The Missing Ones by Patricia Gibney

Book Description

The hole they dug was not deep. A white flour bag encased the little body. Three small faces watched from the window, eyes black with terror.
The child in the middle spoke without turning his head. ‘I wonder which one of us will be next?’
When a woman’s body is discovered in a cathedral and hours later a young man is found hanging from a tree outside his home, Detective Lottie Parker is called in to lead the investigation. Both bodies have the same distinctive tattoo clumsily inscribed on their legs. It’s clear the pair are connected, but how?
The trail leads Lottie to St Angela’s, a former children’s home, with a dark connection to her own family history. Suddenly the case just got personal.
As Lottie begins to link the current victims to unsolved murders decades old, two teenage boys go missing. She must close in on the killer before they strike again, but in doing so is she putting her own children in terrifying danger?
Lottie is about to come face to face with a twisted soul who has a very warped idea of justice.

My View

What a storyline, Patricia Gibney has managed to capture everything in this heart wrenching thriller, there are aspects of love, hate, abuse and historical factors in this captivating debut thriller. I personally found it very easy to engulf myself in the story yes some parts are hard hitting but not in-depth, if they weren’t in the book then the story wouldn’t have been believable.

The prologue for The Missing Ones is breathtakingly, it sweeps you up with a strong element of suspense, in particular for me there was a line that made my heart stop and miss a beat…

The child in the middle spoke without turning his head. ‘I wonder which one of us will be next?’

As the investigation into the deaths of seemingly unrelated victims unfolds, Detective Lottie searching for the answers, delves into the past. A cold case that Lottie vowed to resolve, has all the indications with the current murders to be linked together by St. Angela’s. Its a race against time to apprehend the culprit before more individuals are lost, to the repeat of history.

Detective Lottie has a strong willed persona but has cracks in her façade where she struggles to differentiate between work and family. Lottie is a larger than life character and quite strong willed. I fell for her personality she is full of wit and guile with the odd trace of sarcasm which lends a hand to her sometimes landing herself in trouble with her superiors.

I didn’t want The Missing Ones to come to an end, I was so wrapped up in the story and the characters it was impossible for me to put it down at times. The book is a roller-coaster of a journey where there are some magnificent highs but the inevitable lows are where you try not consume yourself with the tragedy that has befallen some of the characters.

I applaud Patricia for a fantastic debut thriller and I wait with baited breath for the next instalment of Detective Lottie Parker.

If there is any book to be read in 2017 this is it, full of grit, spills and thrills, a thriller which will take you down a path of no return until the very last page.

Never Forget by Richard Davis

never forget

Saul Marshall is on the run.
As a wave of seemingly random assassinations engulfs California, Marshall finds himself drawn into a situation spiralling out of control.
He soon discovers some of the webs’ most secure protocols have been compromised by a rogue team of former Chinese agents. When Marshall realises what they plan, the stakes are raised…
And that’s before the Secretary of State gets involved. Can Marshall unravel the deceit and tricks before it’s too late? Can he stop the carnage, or will he become part of it?
One thing is for certain: either way his enemies will never forget.

My Views
What a book! I was hooked from the start, I wanted to know more, needed to know more. Now to understand this isn’t my typical book or storyline that I would read, but the Prologue blew me away. Never Forget is the second in the series compiled by Richard Davis, a follow up to False Prophet, Richards debut thriller.

Now I can hear a lot of people ask how can the prologue define a book, there is one line, the very last penultimate piece which sent me headlong into Never Forget.

And so – swallowing the sickening hysteria – she turned back, and did the only thing she could to save her sister: she placed a trembling finger on the trigger and pulled….

Saul Marshall is off the radar, intent on staying that way, until a nondescript call comes over the police scanner, a simple car chase, becomes a kidnapping. Against all of Saul’s powers of reason he rescues Ellen, now they are being targeted. The storyline of Never Forget takes you down the routes of political disquiet, cyber terrorism encompassing the Dark Net and One Mans quest to stop it all.

Richard has written this second instalment in the Saul Marshall series with the intent of revealing more about Saul. Even with the knowledge of Saul previously being a conman in his teenage years, we learn more about those years and more from his time in the FBI, building a bigger picture of Saul, with more to come, hopefully in the next instalment.

Cleverly written, full of twists n’ turns and just when you think the storyline has concluded a false ending is thrown your way, leading you to delve deeper to the ultimate climax.
A thriller that will leave you wanting more.

My Review

Wow what a rollercoaster, the ups the downs, gripping my seat willing DI Adams and his family to be safe. A family complete, DI Adams, Becky, Ashley and daughter Mia, what’s the worst that can happen after all they have previously been through. More much more, the story full of twists, turns and unbelievable tension.
There is an agenda, one person wants to destroy DI Adams. But who? Sullivan is gone. Jasmine holds the key she has a plan, a movie, a starring role for DI Adams,a crime which can’t be erased. Its there for all to see, one wrong move and the plan is set in motion. No memory of what has befallen him, DI Adams can’t see a way out. His life in turmoil, his family and career hang in the balance, the events unfold, physical and mental torture are never-ending. He needs help but who does he turn too, his family, his ex-police partner, or his boss, who will believe him.

The story holds you in its grasp, willing you to read on, there is laughter and tears but above all a despicable horror at how one person can truly hold on to his family and his sanity. Sheryl has written a truly unimaginable heinous thriller which is captivating and well written.

I would highly recommend reading both of Sheryl Browne’s books, first in series is After She’s Gone, it could be read as a standalone but I wouldn’t recommend it as there is a lot you could miss and not have the full understanding of the second book. This book is not for the faint hearted, it will take you to new heights, adrenaline will pump through your veins, its a fast paced heart wrenching storyline which will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Thank you Sheryl for allowing me to read and review Sins of the Father, I can’t wait for the next instalment of DI Matthew Adams.

After She’s Gone by Sheryl Browne

after shes gone_

Book Description
Patrick Sullivan. A drug dealer, pimp and murderer, there are no depths to which Patrick would not sink, and Detective Inspector Matthew Adams has found this out in the most devastating way imaginable. Patrick’s brother is shot dead in a drug bust gone wrong, and a bitter battle between the two men intensifies, and Matthew finds it increasingly difficult to hold the moral high ground. All he wants is to make the pimping scum suffer the way he did … the way Lily did.
But being at war with such a depraved individual means that it’s not just Matthew who’s in danger. Patrick has taken a lot from Matthew, but he hasn’t taken everything – and now he wants everything.

My Review
On reading this book I came to learn that Patrick Sullivan is a classic bully, drug dealer, pimp, killer and has contempt for women. Matthew Adams was the target of the bullying from Patrick which started at school and carries forward into adult life. Blood is spilled and Patrick is looking for vengeance, Matthew and his family will pay the ultimate price.

The book opens with a heart wrenching scene, the death of a child, it tears at your heart but in the same breath you look to find the reasoning behind it all, the book pulls you in from the very first chapter. There’s no going back. Vengeance becomes the ultimate goal for both Matthew and Patrick. We learn about both families the trauma and abuse suffered, the different paths both have taken. Matthews family have a niece nobody knew about, who has problems herself but starts to help bind the family together. In the case of Patrick we find out he has a daughter that he worships above all others, I found this compelling considering his attitude towards women in general.

After She’s Gone accelerates at a rate of knots that you just can’t help but get swept along. If you like fast, compelling and hard hitting storylines this book is a must for you, A fantastic first in the DI Matthew Adams series, keep it up Sheryl Browne looking forward to book number 2.
